Canada Carbon Rebate

A quarterly rebate that puts federal fuel-charge money back in your pocket.

The Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) is a tax-free quarterly payment for residents of provinces where the federal fuel charge applies. Newcomers can usually claim it as soon as they file their first return.

What it is

The CCR returns most of the federal fuel-charge revenue back to households in eligible provinces. Amounts vary by province and family size, with a rural top-up where it applies.

Typical amount: Hundreds to over a thousand dollars per year for a family of four, depending on the province and rural status.

Who can claim it

  • You're a Canadian resident for income tax purposes
  • You live in an eligible province (e.g., AB, SK, MB, ON, NB, NS, PE, NL) on the first day of the payment month
  • You're 19 or older (or have a spouse/partner, or are a parent living with your child)
  • You file a Canadian tax return

How to apply

  1. 1Get a SIN
  2. 2File your tax return — the CRA enrolls you automatically
  3. 3If you have a spouse/partner, only the first one to file gets the household payment

Common questions

Do I need to apply for the CCR?

No separate application — filing your tax return is the application. The CRA determines eligibility from your return.

What if I live in Quebec or BC?

Those provinces run their own carbon-pricing systems, so the federal CCR doesn't apply there.
