Canada Child Benefit

A tax-free monthly payment for families with kids.

If you have a child under 18 living with you, the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) can put thousands of dollars a year into your bank account — even if you just arrived in Canada.

What it is

The CCB is a tax-free monthly payment from the CRA to help families with the cost of raising children under 18. Amounts depend on your family's adjusted net income, how many kids you have, and their ages.

Typical amount: Up to ~$7,800/year per child under 6 and ~$6,600/year per child 6–17 (2024–25), reduced as family income rises.

Who can claim it

  • You live with a child under 18 and are primarily responsible for their care
  • You're a Canadian resident for tax purposes
  • You (or your spouse/partner) are a citizen, permanent resident, protected person, or temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months
  • You file a Canadian tax return — even with zero income

How to apply

  1. 1Get a SIN for yourself and your child if you don't have one yet
  2. 2Apply through your CRA My Account, or file Form RC66 (and RC66SCH if you're a newcomer)
  3. 3File your tax return every year — payments stop if you don't file

Common questions

Can I get CCB if I just arrived in Canada?

Yes. As a newcomer, you (or your partner) must meet the 18-month residency rule or hold a valid permit in the 19th month. File Form RC66 plus RC66SCH (Status in Canada) to start.

Do I need to file taxes to keep getting CCB?

Yes — both you and your spouse/partner must file a return every year, even with no income, or payments will stop.
